This corner of Ayrshire (Ordnance Survey Sheet 70) seems to have a rich connection with Parkers. The villages and districts of Newmilns, Galston and Sorn (and Loudoun Parish) feature often in searching Parkers. Newmilns lies below grassy slopes running down to the River Irvine and was once a centre for lace-making in Scotland. The presence of Parkers was initially thought to be noted in the name of a farm to the South, situated amidst the Lanfine Estate. Parkerston farm house built in 1862 is in a sheltered southfacing location. However on reading Dane Love's excellent book "Scottish Covenanter Stories" (Neil Wilson Publishing, 2000)we find on page 40 an interesting alternative:
"In the kirkyard at Galston Ayrshire is a headstone commemorating Andrew Richmond 'who was killed by bloody Graham of Claverhouse, June 1679.' His father was the farmer at Parkieston."
This makes us believe that despite the present-day name the farm may never have been farmed by Parkers, however this listed building's name provides a valuable reminder of a possible shared Ayrshire connection.
The book can be obtained at amazon.co.uk as can "Historical Aspects of Newmilns" (Newmilns & Greenholm Community Council, 1990) which provides a great all round view of the town and its history.

Branches and connections of the families originating there can be found in Ayrshire still, in Glasgow, in Perthshire, Ontario Canada, Western Australia and possibly in the midwest of the US.
Our initial researches have given many satisfying insights into our own line and there may be facts we can share, and new connections you can bring. Take a look and let us know.
